In a world of Instagram-ready Rapunzel hair, it’s hard for fine-haired gals not to feel a little volume envy from time to time. And, while there’s nothing wrong with normal-to-fine hair on a good day, little sucks the spring from your step like a good style gone flat.
In a world where we’re always running late and never stop hitting snooze, it’s just not realistic to curl every strand from root to end Monday through Friday–Instagram hair is anything but instant!
To help save your time and style, here are our top ways to create thicker, fuller, more epic hair without spending all morning in a cloud of hairspray.
1. Prep Your Roots with Mousse
If you need more volume and lift, getting mousse on the roots of your will be essential to keeping that bounce all day long. Just be sure you stick to applying on your roots only, otherwise the extra product will weigh down strands mid-length.
2. Break Out Your Blow Dryer
The trick to great hair volume is to blow dry everything the opposite way that you want to wear it. So for example, if you plan to part your hair to the right, you’ll want to do all your styling steps with your hair going to the left.
To start, use your blow dryer and give some lift with your fingers at the root. If your dryer has an ionic setting that can be turned off, be sure to do so as ions create smoothness (which is the opposite of volume). Flip from side to side as you dry and even flip upside down for a minute or two. You just want to get all of the hair lifted up and going away from the scalp.
3. Use a Wand to Wave Away Straight Strands
Just like your drying method, use a curling wand to create a few waves in the opposite direction as your hair will be allowed to rest. Even if that’s just being tucked behind your ears, wield your hot iron into twists that go in opposing directions so the bends in your hair will play off of each other to create extra lift.
4. Take a Pin or Claw and Loosely Twist
After your hair is all waved up, wrap it into a very high bun and secure it loosely with a claw or pin. Let that set while you get ready. This creates additional volume because the hair is now directed upward and cooling/ setting while you get ready.
Ta-Da! You’ve now got all-day volume that will stop even the finest hair from falling flat!
When you’re dressed and makeup is done and you’re ready to roll, take the pin out and let the hair fall. Give it a good veil of light old hairspray for hold and walk out the door with some extra bounce in your step–and hairstyle.
